Certified Green Professional
The Certified Green Professional Designation - How builders and other professionals become Green Builders.
Offered by NAHB's University of Housing, the Certified Green Professional designation is another way building professionals can become educated in, and involved with green building. The designation requires 24 hours of NAHB-approved training, and additional continuing education every two years. Subjects covered in training discuss how green homes provide buyers with lower energy costs and higher value, and will include strategies for incorporating green-building principles into homes without driving up the cost of construction. The designation curriculum is based on the highly-successful Green Building for Building Professionals two-day course, and other requirements including the Business Management for Building Professionals one-day course.
Upon successful completion, that individual is awarded the CGP designation, recognizing a high degree of professional competence. This designation is available to individuals only, and does not apply to companies, nor to specific homes or projects. Training courses are offered at national events like the International Builders Show, the National Green Building Conference, and similar events. In partnership with local home building associations, required training is also offered at additional events and locations.
For more information about the Certified Green Professional designation, visit www.nahb.org/cgpinfo or call the HBRANH at (603) 228-0351.

Green Building Initiative (GBI)
Click here to access the members-only, virtual, green building training program.
This program is available to all members through our partnership with the Green Building Initiative (GBI). The site features eight independent training modules developed based on the areas of assessment within the NAHB National Green Building Guidelines/Standard. They include:
- Green Building Overview
- Energy Basics
- Water and Moisture Management
- Windows
- HVAC System Overview
- Indoor Air Quality
- Energy Efficient Homes
- Water Efficiency
Each training module features content that aligns with the specific subject area. For example, the "Energy Basics" section features related content on topics such as heat transfer, conduction, convection, radiation, insulation, moisture vapor and thermal comfort.
In addition to the training modules, the site also contains a basic building overview course titled "Construction 101" which provides a detailed introduction to the principles of green building and a "Best Green Building Practices" section, with 25 short videos on different green building techniques. The "resources" section features green building case studies, PowerPoint presentations and other green resources.
All of the site's content is delivered through video presentations, corresponding slide shows, study guides and quizzes which allow the user to test his or her comprehension of the material. With no pre-set order to the training modules, the design of the site enables users to select whichever topic they wish, allowing them to advance at their own pace.
This exciting tool should prove invaluable to any residential construction professional looking to build green.
