The NAHB Green Building Program offers two resources for scoring homes: the ANSI approved ICC 700-2008 National Green Building Standard. Both offer a variety of line items that a builder can choose from in creating a green home, organized into overarching sections, or guiding principles.

The Guidelines reference Lot Design, Resource Efficiency, Energy Efficiency, Indoor Environmental Quality, Homeowner Education, and Global Impact. The Standard addresses these same areas, but also provides guidance for multifamily construction, remodeling and renovation projects and site development for the creation of green subdivisions.

Ready to go green? Go to www.nahbgreen.org to score your project! Click on the Green Scoring Tool tab and Register or sign in to determine how your project would rate using the National Green Building Standard or the ICC 700-2008 National Green Building Standard.

Consumers can develop ideas to discuss with their builder or remodeler. Builders or remodelers can develop green home designs to discuss with their trades and customers. If they intend to get the homes certified, they can develop their designs to hand off to their verifiers. The tool allows you to explore as much or as little of the supplementary information that you need or want at any step. The tool also provides continual feedback, informing you at every step where you stand and what you need to do to make your home green.

You must register to use the interactive scoring tool. Registering will allow you to save, edit, review and track green home projects. You may work on one or several green scoring projects with the scoring tool, which provides the unique opportunity to compare building options.
